40 Black-Owned Beauty Supply Stores You Should Know

Jan 27 2016

For decades, the hair care industry in the Black community has been dominated by Asian entrepreneurs and larger corporations like Strength of Nature and L’Oréal. Both brands have had a strong hold on the “ethnic” beauty market especially after acquiring numerous brands from Motions to Softsheen-Carson. That is, until the natural hair movement gained momentum and brought about a wave of Black entrepreneurs looking to reclaim the Billion dollar industry. With African Americans purchasing nine times more (repeat: NINE TIMES MORE) beauty and grooming products than any other ethnic group, yet owning less than 1% of that market share, it’s only right that there is a major shift in ownership from hair care products to the beauty supply stores notoriously owned by Asians. In an effort to support the growing number of Black-Owned Beauty Supply stores, we’ve rounded up 40 that you should be supporting around the country. Don’t forget to click on each photo for more info and if you know of any others that should be added to the list, comment below.

HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR SKIN USING CLARISONIC MIA 2

Beautiful healthy skin is the foundation to slaying any natural or glam make-up look.  Here's how I transformed my skin using the Clarisonic Mia 2!

After making sure I fully charged my Mia 2 I incorporated these 7 steps into my skincare regiment:

  1. I use the Clarisonic Mia 2 daily. I prefer to use it at night because I find it beneficial to allow my skin to rest after exfoliation. It also allows my skin to fully benefit from any oils and other nutrients used after cleansing without adding make-up, primers or other products to the mix.
  2. I remove eye make-up by hand. I've been using Andalou Naturals Revitalizing Lash and Lid Make-up Remover because it gently removes my waterproof mascara without leaving an oily residue. I try to use gentle products on the sensitive skin around my eyes to minimize wrinkles and sagging.  I'm trying to look like Angela Bassett when I'm 50+ and Cicely Tyson when I'm 90!

  3. I moisten the Clarisonic Mia 2 brush with warm water, then apply the Deep Pore Daily Cleanser. This cleanser is formulated for daily use with the Clarisonic. Twice a week I also use Mario Badescu Glycolic Foaming Cleanser to get ride of any hyperpigmentation.
  4. After turning on the Mia 2, I follow the T-zone timer prompts while cleansing my skin by moving the brush over my skin in a circular motion.  Here's the order in which I cleanse my skin.
    1. 20 seconds
    2. 20 seconds
    3. 10 seconds
    4. 10 seconds
    5. I move from one section to the other when the when the Mia pulcates. I love this self timing feature. Takes the guess work out of things. NOTE: Don't press the brush to the skin too forcefully. Allow it to over the skin to reap maximum cleansing results.
  5. I gently cleanse the brush after use and let it air dry. I shampoo the brush every few days to keep it free of any dirt or bacteria.
  6. I follow up with my favorite toner. Currently I'm using Mario Badescu's Seaweed Toner. This calms and resets pH level of the skin.
  7. Apply your favorite carrier or essential oil mix and moisturizer. I use tea tree oil and rose hip seed oil and Trader Joe's Nourish antioxidant Facial Moisturizer. The tea tree has wonderful anti-bacterial properties and minimizes inflammation from breakouts. This is great for those suffering from regular or occasional ache. I made a video about the many benefits of rose hip seed oil. Take a look!  It's like liquid gold for your skin. The Trader Joe's moisturizer I'm using is oil free and my skin is loving it.
That's it in a nut-shell! Do you have a Clarisonic Mia 2? Love it or Hate it? Comment below.

My Money Is Funny -- But I'm Refilling These Empties Honey!

Stuff gets real when your money is funny and you're staring at  January empties!

Like many of you, I've resolved to do better at managing my money in 2016 in order to fulfill some pretty exciting financial goals. To meet these goals I've set 2 rules for myself:
  1.  Only shop for skincare/beauty supplies once a month! (YIKES!!!! THE STRUGGLE!!!!  help.me)
  2. Only BUY a product, if I've run out of it.

So far I'm 21 days in. I CAN NOT LIE - this is a major challenge! Overcoming the urge to make impulse buys is hard! On the other hand, it's made me more disciplined and organized when it comes to purchases, I'm only re-purchasing items I'm really "in-love" with AND it's provided a wonderful opportunity for me to SHOP MY STASH! I created an amazing look (see above) while exploring my Limited Edition Anastasia Beverly Hills Self Made Palette last week and discovered I love that purple!
Limited Edition Anastasia Beverly Hills Self Made Palette

Anywho, after taking a look at my empties, this what I've decided to purchase this month and why:

1. Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Pencil:  Miora (my daughter) loves this pencil because it's waterproof and clay formulation help it last all day! College, theater and work life are hectic and she doesn't want to have to check her face all day. The fine pencil goes on smoothly and mimics brow hair. Also, the medium brown shade isn't too red or ashy and goes perfect with her warm completion. It's a winner in her book.  Check it out here!

2. BareMinerals Warmth All Over Face Color:  Buying this mineral bronzer was a no brainer! I'm a huge fan of the BareMinerals product line for oily skin and have been using "Warmth" as my bronzer of choice or almost 10 years. It's intended to be used all over the face for a sun-kissed glow. I love to dust it on my cheek-bones, around my hairline and I've recently started using this beautifully warm brown as a transition color just above my eyelids.  If you like effortless make-up looks, this is a must have.  Get yours here!

3. BareMinerals Matte Foundation: Again, I love this line. It's non-irritating, non-pore clogging formulation is perfect for all skin types. BareMinerals stepped up their Women of Color friendly shades a few years ago, so the "Deep Dark" powder is perfect for Miora and I love the "Medium Tan." The coverage is light to medium, but it can be build up if needed. The matte formula helps to manage Miora's combination skin and my oil slick! Check out the colors!

4. BareMinerals Lasting Line Long-Wearing Eyeliner (Absolute Black): I happened upon this product by total accident and have been hooked ever since. It's the creamiest, most pigmented eyeliner I've ever used. The pencil is super precise and it's creamy formulation makes it easy to blend out for softer or smokey looks. PLUS - this stuff has the audacity to stay in place ALL DAY LONG! Even on oily skin and eyelids there's no running or smearing. SCORE!
Other colors include: Always Charcoal, Lasting Brown, and Eternal Bronze.  Check them out!

5. Clarisonic Deep Pore Daily Cleanser:  This cleanser gets deep down into my pores in a way that no other product has while also being gentle enough for daily use. It doesn't leave my skin feeling stripped, irritated or tight, just....well...clean. I love it. This is totally a skin-care holy grail for me and Miora. You won't find it in stores so get yours here!

What are your skin-care and beauty "must-haves?" What empties do you absolutely have to replace?  Tell me in the comments section or take a picture of them and tag me on instagram

Thanks!  L
