My 1st Natural Hair Blow Out! Love it!

Here's what I used:

WASHED AND CONDITION: Elasta QP Moisture Cream Shampoo, Garnier Frutis Triple Nutrition Conditioner (love this stuff)

LEAVE IN:  The Conditioner by Paul Mitchell
BLOWDRY: Got2Be Kera-flat & GOT2Be Guardian Angel Balm these are wonderful heat protectants and blow out/flat iron products.

MOISTURE:  Quemet Biologics Alma & Olive Heavy Cream (love this stuff!)

Natural Hair Styles | Natural Hair Fail turned Wavy Curly Updo!

Natural Weight Loss Challenge! I've lost 13.5 pounds! Whoot-whoot!

Hey guys!

I'm so happy to share that I've lost another 5.5 pounds since my last update!  So far I've lost 13.5 pounds this month.

I've been eating clean, sticking to my Daniel's Fast and doing a bit of exercise which has made me feel sooo great!

On Wednesday, I'm going to share some of my meal plans and a couple of other great details about what I'm doing.  Look forward to seeing you then!  In the meantime, please enjoy this video update!

HOW TO DEPOT LIPSTICK INTO COOL LIP PALETTE

Hi guys!  This Make-up Monday I thought I'd show you how I depot my lipstick and house them in a space saving pill cozy!  For this depotting project I'm using a LA Colors Lipstick, an exacto knife, large spoon, napkin and a 7 day pill cozy I got for a $1.00 from the local dollar store.

This project is cheap, quick, easy and saves lots of space!

After letting your lipstick sit at room temperature for 15 minutes, using a napkin, gently twist and remove the lippie from its container and place it in the center of the large spoon.  If some lipstick is left in the container after depotting, just use your exacto knife to remove the remaining product.
Use a long stemmed lighter, heat the bottom of the spoon to melt down the lipstick being very careful not to boil it.  Boiling causes the lipstick formulation to change and you don't want that.
I like to move the flame back and forth to keep the temperature even and to evenly melt my lippie.
Once the lipstick has completely melted, just pour it into one of the compartments of your pill cozy, let it sit for 10 minutes and you're done!

I hope you enjoyed the video!  See you next time!

Natural Hair Typing: What's My Hair Type?

Hey guys!

One of the things I commit to doing a few times a week is answering the questions you post here on Facebook, Instagram (Boldly Blending Out) or on my Youtube channel.  One of the most frequently asked questions is concerning natural hair typing (whether I do or don't) and what my hair type happens to be.  I've answered this question quite a few times, but took this opportunity to vlog (see below) my thoughts on hair typing in general and to actually show you the various hair textures on my head.  :)

Later I think my daughter will also share her hair types.  Until then...enjoy!

Question:  Do you think hair typing is dividing the natural hair community?

NATURAL HAIR Flat Twist Out - Design Essentials Curl Stretch Cream

Hey Guys!

I last month I attended a natural hair meet up (which was so much fun!!!) and received a container of Design Essentials Curl Stretch Cream during the product swap.  I've finally gotten around to using it.

In this video, I'm revealing the results of using the product on a flat twist out.  I didn't start with washed hair.  Instead I transitioned my natural hair from a wash and go to the flat twist out and loved the results!

I'm not going to talk too much about the product yet because this is my first time using it and I want to try using it in different ways so that I can provide you with the best product review possible.

Hope you like the results!  I can't wait to hear your thoughts, so please do leave a comment!

NATURAL HAIR | BANGIN Bantu Knot Out!

OMG!!!  Stop the Press!!!!!!  FINALLY!!!!  Bantu Knot Out Success!!!

Bantu knot outs used to be my go to style during my transition to natural hair, but when I reached the 10-12 month transitioning milestone I disliked the results no matter what I did.  NOW I'm thrilled that I can once again add this easy style to my stretched hair rotation.  :)

Hope you like the results!  Let me know your thoughts.  :)

Best Twist Cream, Gel and Butter for Natural Hair

Requested: NATURAL HAIR | SOFT FLEXI ROD SET PART 2 - RESULTS

So I finally got around to doing my first flexi rod set of the year!  Whoot-whoot!  :)

I absolutely love flexi rod sets on natural hair.  They are beautiful and so versatile.

To prep my hair, I washed with Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tinge Conditioner, used Kinky Curly Knot Today as my leave in conditioner, then saturated each section (i like to roll the hair wet) with my water bottle which contained 50/50 water and aloe juice.  Lastly, before rolling I applied Organic Root Stimulator Twist and Lock Gel on each section.  This product has parabeans in it, so I generally only use when I know I'll be using a clarifying shampoo or giving myself an apple cider vinegar treatment.

Let me know what you think of the finished style!

Great Protein Treatments For All Hair Types!

Hey guys!  Just wanted to share with you some of my absolute favorite store bought natural hair protein treatments.  I love these particular products because they work beautifully on a variety of hair types!

Many folks are afraid of protein because they think it'll dry the hair out or cause it to get hard...but when used properly, you actually get the opposite results.  Protein is important for our hair because it strengthens it, softens it, allows our curls to pop pop pop and helps tremendously with hair length retention.

I hope you try one of these on your next wash day!

Natural Hair | Quick Beach Waves - 2 Heads, 1 Style: Tutorial and Results 3C + 3C, 4A/B

When my daughter and I began our natural hair journey, we quicklWy realized that some techniques and products worked perfectly for her, but left my hair a hot mess and vice versa.  While others worked perfectly fine on both of our hair textures (she has thick coily hair, I have fine combination hair) but left us with beautiful, but sometimes different looks.  For example here's:

Daughter's Wash And Go

Mommy's Wash and Go

For that reason we've been looking forward to trying different natural hair styles and products at the same time to share with you our thoughts and results.

Here is our first set of videos in this series!  I hope you enjoy them!

Lovin Some Lippies!!!

I've been rather obsessed with lippies for the past few months.  You guys know I'm on a budget, so I cannot camp out at the MAC counter awaiting the newest RiRi lippies at almost $20 bucks a pop.

BUT I DID FIND SOME DELISH wonderfully pigmented, moisturizing and long wearing lipsticks from Wet n Wild, NYX and ICE that I absolutely love!!!  The fact that their price ranged from .99 cents - $2.99 made them deals I could not pass!

I thought I'd share the love by demo'ing a few for you!  Check them out and let me know your favorite!  Looking for a signature color for summer.  Blessings!!  :)

Dr. Oz # Day Detox Cleanse | I Lost 3 Pounds and Feel GREAT!

Hey guys!

I recently completed the Dr. Oz 3 Day Detox as a part of my health and wellness journey.  I did the cleanse in hopes of eliminating harmful toxins, restore my system and to reset my body while giving it a break from all of the bad stuff we sometimes consume.

I decided to do the Detox because I've had sooo much trouble kick starting my normal 21 day fast.  It just wasn't happening for me, so I was so happy when I discovered Dr. Oz's 3 Day Detox!  Anyone can do just 3 days, right?  LOL.

All you need is 3 days, a blender and $16 a day! What could go wrong, right?  LOL!

Enjoy the vlog below where I share my thoughts on detox and provide a few tips I learned along the way!

Here's the detox grocery list and 3 day meal plan!

New Technique: Dry Wash and Go Method

For the past few weeks, I've been using this wash and go method on my hair to reduce drying time and to minimize fairy knots.  I love it!  Another benefit of this method is that it elongates your curls.

In the video I'm using a leave in solo - but if you need a gel or styler, just add it after applying the leavin.  My hair dried in HALF the usual time!  LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Field Tested In High Dews: Kinky Curly Curling Custard

Hey everyone!

Summer heat and high dews (moisture in the air) can cause the best hair day to end in a frizzy, puffy, undefinded mess!  lol.  Trust me...I KNOW!

So recently I uploaded a video (Perfect Summer Curls: No Frizz DEWS and DONT'S )
where I discussed some of the best products and ingredients to incorporate in  your summer regimen to put your best curls, coils, waves and kinks forward!

Today, I road tested one of my favorite summer/high dews gels Kinky Curly Curling Custard so you could see how well my curls held up.  Details:  today's temp- 90 degrees | Dews 70

Here's my hair in the morning:

And here it is late evening!

Not too shabby huh?  :)  I used the dry wash and go method for product application and love the results.  No frizz.  No shrinkage.  No puffiness.  THAT'S A WINNER IN MY BOOK!

HOW DO YOU LIKE THE RESULTS?  WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SUMMER GEL?

Thank you ladies for joining the challenge!  I am so excited about what we'll accomplish collectively and individually during the challenge!!

Here's a sneak peek at our daily goals and squat schedule for the challenge!

Today, is Day 3 of the Challenge. Now I know some of you didn't begin with us on day 1 - but no worries!  Feel free to modify the first few days of the challenge so that you able to catch up with us over the next week.

Here's a pretty simple diagram of a basic squat.  Technique is everything!  :)

The goal is to get tight and right!  lol - but this should also be fun and allow us to incorporate exercise into our daily schedules to maintain optimal health and to live long glorious lives!  I was so saddened today to learn that one of the dads I've known via my daughter's theater program passed away at only 44 years of age from a heart attack!!!  Live is so precious.  He loved his children (ages 15 and 10), his wife (college sweethearts) and his community.  Let's pledge to take care of our temples (bodies) and be intentional and thoughtful about our self care.

I love you all!!!  Thank you for coming together around this exciting challenge!!!  I can't wait to learn more about you!

Please subscribe to the blog so that you receive notice of  new posts and updates THEN TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO JOIN THE CHALLENGE IN THE COMMENTS SECTION BELOW!

Stay Slim Dairy-Free Shrimp Taco Recipe

Mexican: The Dairy-Free, Fresh-Tasting Taco
While Mexican restaurants in the United States often serve enchiladas covered in melted cheese and then topped with a dollop of sour cream, tacos are a much lighter -- and authentically Mexican -- dish. This sautéed shrimp version is especially healthful, punched up with fresh tomatoes and lime juice.

Servings: Serves 4
Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 small onion , roughly chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 dried chipotle chilis , seeded and chopped
  • 3 tomatoes , roughly chopped
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 1/2 pounds shrimp , peeled and deveined
  • 1/4 cup lime juice to taste
  • Cilantro
Directions
Place a large sauté pan over medium-high heat, and sweat onions in 1 tablespoon of oil for 3 to 4 minutes or until translucent. Add garlic and chipotle peppers, and continue to sauté for 2 minutes. Add tomatoes, season lightly with salt and cook for 1 minute before removing from heat.

Blend mixture well in small batches until smooth, adding a little water if needed, and reserve. In a large heavy-bottom pot, heat remaining oil over high heat. Add shrimp, season with salt and pepper and sauté for 2 minutes stirring occasionally, allowing the shrimp to lightly color. Remove shrimp from the pan to a plate and add the tomato mixture to the remaining oil in the pan, being careful, as it will splatter slightly.

Cook sauce for 2 minutes, stirring constantly, and add shrimp back to pot. Once shrimp are cooked through and coated with the sauce, remove from heat and season to taste with lime juice, salt and pepper. Finish with the chopped cilantro and serve with corn tortillas.
Enjoy!

Stay Slim Meals: Pad Thai Noodles

Thai: Sweet Noodles Done Light
Pad Thai is one of the tastiest noodle dishes in Asian cooking, but most renditions are also swimming in oil, which means the typical takeout box will contain 1,140 calories and 7 grams of saturated fat. Make it yourself so you can pile on the vegetables and use fewer rice noodles. This recipe offers other tweaks to lighten the dish.
Servings: Makes 4 servings
Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup fish sauce
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar , packed
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar or distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 7 ounces (1/2-inch-wide) dried rice noodles
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 clove garlic , minced
  • 1 pound medium shrimp , shelled and deveined
  • 4 ounces baked or fried tofu , cut into 1/4" x 1" squares (about 1 cup)
  • 2 large eggs , lightly beaten, optional
  • 1/2 cup chopped scallions (green parts only, cut into 1-inch lengths)
  • 1/2 cup chopped roasted peanuts , plus additional for garnish
  • 3 cups bean sprouts , plus additional for garnish
  • 1/2 cup sliced red pepper
  • 1 lime , cut into wedges
Directions
Stir together all the sauce ingredients until the sugar is dissolved. Meanwhile, soak the noodles in warm water to cover, about 30 minutes or until softened; drain.

Heat the oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat until hot but not smoking. Add the garlic and sauté, stirring, about 20 seconds, just until fragrant. Add the shrimp and cook, stirring, about 2 minutes, until pink and not quite cooked through. Stir in the noodles until coated with the oil.

Add the sauce to the noodles and cook, stirring occasionally, 5 to 7 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed; add water if necessary to soften the noodles. Stir in the tofu.

If using the eggs, create a well in the center of the wok by pulling the noodles to the side. Add the eggs and cook, stirring, until firm. Stir in the scallions, peanuts and bean sprouts; blend well and heat through. Transfer the noodles to a serving platter and garnish with the red pepper, bean sprouts, peanuts and lime.

For a healthier version: Reduce the fish sauce and brown sugar to 2 tablespoons each. Cut the vegetable oil to 1 tablespoon, and use only baked tofu. If using eggs, substitute one egg white for one of the eggs. Use dry roasted peanuts, and reduce to 1/4 cup.

Recommended ingredients: Fish sauce and tofu are available at most supermarkets, specialty stores and health food stores.

Beauty Rush! Snag Them Before 9PM PST!

I love all things natural...especially BareMinerals Makeup! I was introduced to it about 8 years ago when stress caused me to experience a bad case of breakouts --- and I do mean a BAD case of breakouts. They were painful, very visible and quite consistant. OUCH!!!!!

Anyway, my skin care specialist helped me to revise my facial cleansing regiment and also informed me about the benefits of mineral make-up. Within an week - my face had cleared up significantly! I explored a few mineral makeup brands, but fell in love with BareMinerals because of the variance in colors, the way it blended and the positive response I noticed in my skin! I love by this stuff. It is not irriating and actually helps you to maintain the overall health of your skin. People often say my skin glows! I love that. Because have oily skin, I love wearing the power because it helps to keep shine in check. Any whoo - BareMinerals has a few sales! Check out their line and try it! I wear Tan and Medium Tan depending upon the time of year. :)

My Hair Goals for 2013 and Stretched Styles

Hey everyone!  A lot of you have been asking me what my 2013 hair goals are and to be honest, I really don't have any.  I just want to have healthy hair.  :)

As I explained in a recent vlog, I've made the decision to keep my hair stretched as much as possible this winter to help retain length and to keep my hair in it's healthiest state.  It served me well last winter so if it ain't broke....why fix it?

I'll stretch my hair using a variety of methods --- here are a few of my favs!

FLEXI RODS SETS
Lasts about a week!
Many style variations
PERFECT FOR TRANSITIONERS

BRAID OUTS
Last up to 5 days, more if you rebraid each night

BRAID AND CURL
Lasts up to 5 days
Lots of style variations
PERFECT FOR TRANSITIONERS

TWIST AND CURL
Lasts up to 5 days
Lots of stye variations
PERFECT FOR TRANSITIONERS

TWIST OUT
Last up to 5 days, more if you retwist at night

I had fallen so completely in love with wash and go's I'd completely forgotten how much I love wearing stretched styles.  :)  Not only are these styles lower manipulation (some more than others and depending upon how often you retwist or rebraid) but they also allow me to enjoy my length!  That's always a plus!

Do you have hair goals for 2013?  What are they?

Fall & Winter Moisture: 3 Quick, Easy Cheap "Natural Hair" Solutions

I've been getting lots of requests for moisture retention methods for natural hair. Here's my go to process for giving those natural curls, kinks and coils much needed moisture. Ofcourse each method is inexpensive, quick and easy!

Health and Wellness: Prepping for the week!

My I have a goal of loosing about 20 pounds over the next 90 days.  Planning is everything for me.  I'm not going to diet, but I am going to be mindful of my diet - what I eat.

Planning is everything for me so I purchased some inexpensive containers from Walmart to put salad servings in for the week, along with my fruit servings too.  Ordinarily, I'd spend the weekend cooking my meals for the week and putting each meal into a container too, but I've already made 16 bean soup (YUMMY) and some pimped out Black Eyed Peas (see below.)

When creating meals for the day, I'm using the weight watchers point system as my guide.  Based upon my current weight and weight goals, I can eat up to 27 points for week one, 26 week 2-3 and them 25 through the end of March.

Learn more about the point system and download a point system guide here: http://www.buzzle.com/templates/charts/weight-watchers-points-list.pdf

DIY Kissable Lips For Winter

Don't Tell Me Happy New Year If...

Can we all agree that the phrase, "Happy New Year" doesn't mean a thing if we drag the same sad old you into the new year?  One can't bring the same old toxic relationships, behaviors, detrimental habits and habitual hangers on into the New Year and expect to experience a NEW YOU!

Let's think about the things those things that cause us stress, contribute to unhealthy habits and just plain sap our joy and resolve to flip the script in 2013!

ENVISIONING THE NEW YOU!
Take a few minutes to envision the life you want for yourself.  Answering these questions may help to get you started:

1.  How does your future self look physically?
2.  How does your future self feel about her body?
3.  What do her ideal friendship and romantic relationships look?  Describe them.
4.  How does your future self contribute to the world around her?  Church, volunteerism, mentoring, philanthropy, etc.

5.  How does she treat her body?
6.  What's her personal style? (beauty, style, spirit)
7.  How satisfied is your future self with her career?  Why?
8.  How do others view your future self?  What level of respect does she garner?  What do people say about her when she isn't around?
9.  How does your future self treat others?
10.  How does  your future self demonstrate self respect when it comes to relationships, honoring her body, honoring her time and her finances?

Jot down answers to these questions on a sheet of paper.  Take it a step further and create a visual representation too!  Be sure to take time to think through your answers, meditate and pray about these areas as well and the answers - real, true answers will reveal themselves.  Be sure to incorporate the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of your being.

Be authentic!  No Lye!  :)
